Athelstan Pupils Take On New Sports
Pupils at Athelstan Community Primary School have been able to take part in the less mainstream sport of Fencing as well as Quik Sticks Hockey following funding received from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust.
Athelstan Community Primary School wanted to offer pupils the chance to participate in extra curricular clubs focussed on less mainstream sports like Fencing and Quik Sticks Hockey, but with funding from Local Authorities for such activities being cut they turned to the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust for help.
Sue Thompson, Business Manager at Athelstan Community Primary School commented “We are passionate about developing all aspects of the curriculum, and this means that we offer a very wide selection of extra curricular activities to enable our pupils to pursue wider interests. As you would expect we were delighted when we received the funding from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust as it enabled us to purchase Fencing and Quik Sticks Hockey equipment offering the children the opportunity to take part in more unusual sports.”
“Fencing demands a high level of fitness and mental concentration, and has been proven to teach physical discipline and mental control. Whilst Quik Sticks Hockey is a game played by 7-11 year olds using wooden hockey sticks. It is designed to be a small side game using a larger and lighter ball allowing the children to understand and learn the basic skills needed to progress to full team hockey.”
John Garbutt chairman of the trust added “It is so important to get children interested in sports, not only does it improve their health and fitness levels, but the skills they learn such as self control and team work will stay with them forever and can be carried over to all activities they undertake.”
The Kingspan Insulation Community Trust provided Athelstan Community Primary School with over £1345.00 which was used to purchase the equipment required to deliver both the Fencing and Quik Sticks Hockey Clubs.
